The city of San Sebastian (Donostia in Basque) is a well-known city for food-lovers. But it is actually also a great place to go for football! The city is situated in the Bay of Biscay, in the Basque Country of Spain. Only a few kilometers west of the French border. The people in the Basque Country are known for their passion and football culture. Therefore I was really looking forward to this one. After the recent refurbishments of the stadium, the Estadio Anoeta now holds about 39.500 seats. It is now a top-class stadium.
It is always great interest and focus when the big ones (Real Madrid or FC Barcelona) visits the smaller clubs in Spain. Sociedad have done really well against Barcelona in recent years, so I expected a good turnout for this match. And I was not dissapointed. It actually turned out to be a new attendance record. More than 36.500 were inside this wonderful new stadium. The atmosphere at the stadium were fantastic and the singing section was quite large.
On the pitch the match was quite even. In the end the two sides settled for a point each. It was probably a fair result, as both teams really deserved something from this match. In conclusion, I can really recommend to make the trip to San Sebastian and the Estadio Anoeta. San Sebastian certainly has a great stadium, great passionate fans and is in general a wonderful city!
