Report:

Football in the Basque country is always great. The passion and dedication in this part of Spain, is second to none. The city of Vitoria is a city south-west in the Basque region and home to the local pride Deportivo Alaves. The club plays their matches at the great Estadio Mendizorrotza. Opened in 1924, the stadium is the third oldest in Spanish professional football. This is really a proper football stadium and the atmosphere and the stadium reminds a lot of the one from English grounds. The scoreboards on the short-sides are also actually very similar to the ones at the old White Hart Lane in London.

I visited Estadio Mendizorrotza on a cold Friday night in December. Leganes had made the trip from the capital Madrid and both teams were really in desperate need of points. Alaves is historically a bigger club than Leganes and taking the home advantage into account, they were definitely favorites for this one. But football is decided on the pitch and Leganes really put up a good fight. In the end both teams deserved something from this match, so it was probably fair with a point each. All in all, a fantastic football stadium and a great passionate atmosphere. The Alaves fans really kept it going throughout the whole match. So, I can really recommend s visit to Vitoria and the Estadio Mendizorrotza
